Festool Domino Jointing Machine
The Festool Domino is the only machine of its type and currently, there is no alternative in my opinion.
There are machines that can compete with the Domino in some jointing tasks. Woodworkers can consider machines as an alternative such as the
- Duo doweller, which can drill easy alignable dowel holes at a 32mm apart.
- Router and jig can create loose tenon mortices fairly easily but not as quick as the Festool Domino. Also, routers struggle to cut mortices as deep as the Festool Domino DF700
- Dowel jigs are a cheap solution but round dowels cannot compete with the Festool dominos
Festool 574332 Domino DF 500 Joining System
Joining has always been a slow, difficult process. Never again, thanks to the Festool Domino joining system. The system consists of the Domino joiner and pre-fabricated, Beech and Sipo Domino tenons.
The Domino joiner, with its revolutionary cutting method, simple indexing features and adjustable mortise sizing, makes flawless mortises every single time.
The Domino tenon is equally as impressive – it is 100% rotation-proof and far stronger than either biscuits or dowels. It also has a large gluing surface area for extra strength. The unique, patented cutting mechanism consists of a spiral cutter with carbide tip that oscillates as it rotates to create perfect mortises time after time.
This action creates a clean entry for a perfectly flush surface while preventing heat build up in the tooling for long cutter life. The Domino joiner is a simple tool to use with angle, depth and height adjustment scales with positive stops for repeated work and accurate indexing. The included stop pins allow for consistent indexing against the workpiece edge which is critical for perfect alignment when joining panels.
Create precise, solid joints for your largest or smallest projects. The Domino is portable and ergonomic and lets you take the tool to the work for precise joint placement. The adjustable fence for mitered and beveled joints ranges from 0 to 90º with positive stops at 22.5, 45, 67.5, and 90º. Straightforward adjustments for mortise width and depth, and material height.
An available range of tenon sizes and types for maximum joint stability across many different applications. The Domino system is above all economical and efficient. The fast, easy alignment and repeatability of accurate mortises dramatically reduces set-up time and enhances your quality of work. Made in Germany.
Festool 574422 XL DF 700 Domino Joiner
Stationary machines like hollow chisel mortises and slot mortises occupy large amount of floor space in your shop, are expensive to purchase, require a lot of setup and maintenance, and force you to bring the material to the tool.
Festool has taken the revolutionary concept of the Domino joiner and made it larger, the Domino XL Joiner. The Domino XL offers a more elegant solution to the challenge of large scale joinery. Amazingly simple to use, fast and accurate. The Domino XL now complements the capabilities of the original Domino DF 500, with a maximum tenon size of about five and a half -Inch in length (140 mm).
No job is too big for the Domino XL. With an expanded range of thicker, longer tenons, you will quickly and precisely join massive slabs, doors and gates, or construct the most durable of tables and beds. With the Domino XL, you’ve got a system light enough and nimble enough for use anywhere in the shop or the jobsite. When the work piece is too large to come to the machine, this makes all the difference.
Precision placement of solid hardwood tenons guarantees not only a perfect fit, but a finished product that will last for generations. What’s in the box? XL D12 cutter, Plug-it Power Cord, Support Bracket, Wrench and T Loc Systainer Sys 5.
RTS-500 Cutter Adapter for Festool DF700
The RTS-500 Cutter Adapter is a precision-machined. This hardened steel adapter allows you to mount any of the Festool Domino DF500 cutters to the Festool Domino XL DF700. If you want a more universal machine then the DF700 is ideal when used with this adapter. DF700 to cut smaller mortises that previously could only be done with the DF500. Any of the standard Domino Cutter bits (4mm/5mm/6mm/8mm/10mm) will work with this adapter. The RTS-500 Cutter Adapter is sized so that when attached to a DF500 cutter, the overall length is the same as a DF700 cutter. This ensures mortises cut with DF500 cutters on the DF700 are the same width as they would be if cut with the DF500. This also maintains the accuracy of the plunge depth gauge on the DF700 and doesn’t require any additional math to calculate depth.
Festool 497868 8mm Domino Cutter DF 700
The 8mm cutter is the smallest diameter available for the DF 700 XL but with the adapter, you can use Festool DF 500 cutters right down to 5mm.
Festool 497871 14 mm Domino Cutter, DF 700
The 14mm TCT cutter is the largest cutter available for the Festool Joining system. Be aware that Festool DF 700 cutters are not compatible with the Festool Domino DF 500.
Festool 493487 Domino Trim Stop
The Domino Trim Stop enables precise and repeatable mortise placement in ends of narrow workpieces, such as rails or spindles. Designed for material between 7/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch (22 mm and 70 mm) in width.
Sides adjust independently for centered or off-center mortising. Attaches quickly and easily to the Festool Domino Joiner without the need for tools.
Festool 495666 Domino Support Bracket
From the Manufacturer
Replacement part for Domino Joiners. The Base Support Bracket now includes integrated index stops, providing accurate reference points for mortising near the edge of a workpiece. This is particularly useful for narrow workpieces.
When using the flip stops, the center of the cut is 20mm (25/32″) from the edge versus 37mm (1-15/32″) without. The flip stops offer optimal flexibility when using the new 4mm Domino cutter and tenons.
Festool 494847 Domino Hand Rail Fence
Domino Hand Rail Fence for securely joining round workpieces such as handrails. For centering on round stock 1 3/8 to 2 3/8 inches (35mm to 60mm) in diameter. Attaches quickly and easily to the Domino Joiner without the need for tools.
Festool 493488 Domino Cross Stop
From the Manufacturer
For repeat hole spacing between 3-7/8in and 8-1/16in (100mm and 205mm). The Domino Cross Stop enables precise and repeatable mortise placement across the surface or edge of a workpiece.
Designed for material of any length, the Cross Stop increases efficiency by eliminating the need for witness or scribe marks. Adjustable-spaced pins register against the starting edge of the material or in the previous mortise for accurate and consistent spacing of mortises. Attaches quickly and easily without tools to the Festool Domino Joiner.

Woodworking for me is in my blood as a son of a traditional boatbuilder. My Father Malcolm Kett was highly skilled and inventive individual often referred to as ‘Malcolm The Boat’.
Although I have spent a considerable portion of my life seeking further education and gaining qualifications in woodworking, electrical installations, bricklaying and to top it a degree in photography.
Yes, it is a medley of possible career choices but the one that I felt truly at home with was Woodworking. Woodworking has been my staple career choice that has given my family stability.
Why do I write these guides?
We started to write these guides to help our customers. The idea was to provide the information needed to install our made to measure wooden products that we sell on this website and directly to our local customers.
We soon received feedback from people abroad and interested readers not local to us. I like to help people and I am excited that fellow woodworkers or keen DIYers found guidance in my articles. I intend to carry on writing and producing youtube videos for the purpose of providing useful content. Please share our blog with your friends and anyone that could find interest in the magic of working with wood.
I am happy to inform you that we have included some links to related products. If you decide to purchase any product we receive a modest commission from Amazon. This is not considered as our main income but any commission earned is used to provide more tutorials. I thank you for your support.

We have lived and worked here in the Limousin Nouvelle Aquitaine since 2010, building window shutters and external doors. Our Volet manufacturing business is based at our home property as a ‘Cottage Industry’. We are a small business operating partly (60%) off the grid and try our best to practice our woodworking ethically.
How did we come up with the trading name ‘Wallybois’? Well, it is simple really, my best buddy ‘Wally’ and the fact that ‘Bois’ is French for wood and we live in France.
