Fabrication in France

France is a fantastic country practising different cultures from different regions that have evolved from all over the Europe and moulded by profound historical events. France has been ranked as the forth most influential country in the world leaving a positive trail in history. Globalisation has made the influence of the historically most influential countries diluted. Not always positive and clearly has left many disillusioned with ‘Globalisation’ as the effects from the introduction from less fortunate individuals from less aspirational cultures as a taint on Frances forward looking culture. This statement does not mean to be understood as a stereotype as we have also witnessed some who want to make a difference and donate their aspirations to aid all around them. France is thought to be a secular country practising it’s freedoms by the virtue of the ‘1979 Declaration of the rights of man and of the Citizen and in some way based on the principle of LAICITE, the freedom of religion.

The environment is important to us

As the proprietor of www.wallybois.com ‘Volet sur Mesure’ we understand the importance of the historical French events that have given the people of France passion and determination to succeed when others lay down. We have huge respect for French culture and the beautiful country of France. This respect has to be reflected in our determination to provide ethical products that have little negative effect on the environment by using methods which do not use excessive energy or make waste and powering the factory with solar energy is currently at 70% but our goal is to achieve 90%.

Our Factory workshop is based in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region of France and other than just using ethical environmental energy sources we also use PEFC FSC certificated timber for all our wooden products including our base product line: ‘shutters’.

Brexit 🙁

As British citizens whose heart is in France we too want to make a difference and become a positive part for French culture offering our knowledge and skills in woodworking construction. In June 2016 the misled and lied too British People voted to leave the European Union and the result was to leave. If I dare say it: this decision is pure emotionally fed madness!! The people of the UK will suffer extreme negative economic damage and the effects of this damage is already setting it’s roots. As individuals who love France and it’s people we dearly hope the French people will not compare us with those who voted to leave the EU.

Localisation ver Globalisation

In conclusion as citizens exerting their rights to work within the EU 27 we understand that locally produced goods have a huge positive effect on the economy in France not on in money but well-being to. We buy locally in the Limousin and see for ourselves that the money we use to purchase goods provides jobs for our French friends and local taxes for our community. Yes Community is also important so we try to do our bit and be involved with local events. As a craftsmen what’s better than to offer our skills to the local Fête Foraine d’Oradour-sur-Vayres for the construction of the float parade. We hope you too can see that we appreciate the beautiful country of France and that we believe in the culture of France.

We look forward to providing our service to you.

Overview

Today’s finishes? no matter how effective they might be as a long term protector of timber they inherently have negative environmental side affects. Paints that have good protection tend to contain toxins and often carbon based. We are told again and again how bad carbon based toxins are. Good old fashioned oil based paints obviously contain oil hence carbon and more modern finishes such as water based acrylics contain plastics such as resins.

Although we don’t blame anyone for using brico available paint finishes it would be nice to find alternative products that have a more environmental direction, call it mission “tree hugger”!!

There are many ways you can protect your wooden external projects using natural ingredients. Modern finishes set or harden relatively quickly due to hardeners or activators. Some water based products naturally air dry but many natural non chemical hardeners but many natural home made products can take weeks to harden and longer in damp environments. In France Volets otherwise know as Shutters to the Brits living in France and elsewhere are very wellknown for their beautiful colours. France is a beautiful country well deserving the miriad of colour that adorns the window dressings.

Tung Oil / Danish Oil
The Tung tree is a gift with a very useful seed that gives us the Danish oil or natively known as Tung Oil. It coats the wood, this Oil soaks into the wood and hardens fairly quickly when exposed to air. This Oil is widely available and recognised by fellow joiners.

Beeswax (internal use)
Bees wax is obviously natural and has been used for centuries. It can be heated to a fluid to aid application or diluted with tung oil . Once hardened it can be buffed to a sheen, sadly this finished is affected by water and can leave stains and zero preservative qualities.

Linseed oil
Linseed oil is another penetrating oil that can help protect your wood projects. This old is a very well used oil product that is made from the seed of Lin. This oil can be used in it’s boiled or raw state. Boiled linseed oil that is available commercially tends to contain solvents to aid the hardening but traditionally it is placed over a flame and roll boiled until it is still. The boiling process removes any water which is the element that inhibits the drying process.

Shellac
Shellac as found in French polish is made from the Lac bug. Shellac is the key ingredient that is widely used for the famous high gloss ‘French Polish’ finish. Shellac in this form has no a beneficial for your exterior woodwork.

Walnut oil (allergen)
A good oil for internal woodwork and fairly hardwearing

Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil contains waxes that help keep it from degrading, therefore protecting the wood it is applied to.

Sunflower oil
Yes it is only 1e50c and can fry your chips but also protect your wood with some preservative quality because of the high level of vit E

Carnauba wax
Carnauba wax is a wax is extracted from from the leaves of a palm tree that grows in Brazil. This wax is very durable and well known amongst surfer types. I cannot recommend this wax because it is another palm product and we known how controversial that is!!!

Mineral oil
Mineral oil is not natural and should not be chosen but I will forgive you if it is recycled such as old engine oil but it won’t dry for ages and can leave deposits or staining on your clothes.

Some Natural Oils are not Suited for timber
Vegetable based oils are no good as a wood preservative and some are known Allergens.

Almond Oil (allergen)
Sesame Oil
Canola Oil
Hemp Oil
Flax Seed Oil (except as linseed oil)
Olive Oil
Peanut Oil
Corn Oil
Any oils that never really dry out and will always be oily, sticky which attracts dust, dirt, and animal hair.

Lime Wash
Lime wash was a common wood finish for inside and out side timber and is a naturally mold & mildew resistant paint finish and it has been used for centuries. Lime wash finishes are making a comeback not just for the fact they are considered natural but for their soft beauty. Some propriety brands such as ‘Sloan’ Paints are available pigmented or you can make your own using recipes available online.

Voyeur or not to Voyeur?

OK a bit strange but have you ever sat down and watched people pass by?

King Louis XIV, the Sun King was well known as a ‘Peeping Tom* / Voyeurism’ during the 17th century he would love to watch beautiful females bathing in pools expressing their curves was considered to waiver the guards concentration! Louis considered this as a security risk or he was just jealous so he had walls built around these gardens with shutters installed which he can only open!!!

* The term ‘Peeping Tom’ is also associated with shutters or so it is told that a Man called Tom while hiding behind shutters would voyeur at Lady Gadiva who for what ever reason we will never know would ride through the streets of Coventry in her ‘Birthday suit’ (Naked). Not quite like ‘Queen’ and their iconic music video supporting their hit track ‘I want to ride my bicycle’ as she rode a horse not a bike!!

Wallybois uses Ethically Sourced Timber Suppliers that are Certified by PEFC or/and FSC

For product manufacturing to be considered ethical when our forests are suffering from ‘over felling’ we as the customer has a responsibility to ensure the environment is protected. In the UK, France and other countries this protection is covered by the efforts of the FSC and the PEFC, their work is praised by industry and individuals alike. The FSC is a non governmental organisation mirroring this is their statement: “FSC is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.” Volets in France dressing the windows as seen by many as the identity of France itself are subject to ageing and weathering against the wide ranging temperatures and climate. These timber shutters are at risk of limited lifespan as a result but we as consumers can make efforts to prevent decay but also when the time comes to replace the ancient volets with shutters made from sustainable materials.

PEFC states it is the world’s leading forest certification organization.
This international not for profit, non-governmental organization is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification is the certification system of choice for small forest owners, as written on their own website. This organisation covers 307 million hectares, 750,000 owners and 20,000 companies which is no mean feat. Their great work has clearly made a positive difference to responsible forest management.

The key is that to neutralise carbon emissions and this is achievable with positive forest management which the replanting of sapling trees helps to achieve this by absorbing more carbon monoxide than old trees. My grief is poorly managed Oak forests! as harvesting Oak trees have little sustainability if replanting is not applied. We must realise that Oak trees and similar species which do not survive coppicing require additional efforts to be sure of future of our planet.

In Conclusion

It is great that these organisations are here to guide us in the right direction away from the madness adorning ‘Donald Trump’ and his negative self serving backfiring agenda coupled with the Tory UK government that is hoping to slash environmental regulations post Brexit. So we as individuals must do what is right and at the very least source materials that are harvested with ethics, ecology and sustainability in mind. So make good decisions and order you timber products from producers using FSC or PEFC certified materials which carry their logo or practicing FSC or PEFC recommendations such as www.wallybois.com does on a daily basis.

‘By popular demand’ we are very happy to offer a delivery service for our customers. It has been a long time coming but we had to research all our options to be able to provide an efficient package for you our client. Our main business is the making of shutters (Volets) but ocassionaly we are asked to build doors such as this oversized 'Diamond Raised Panel Door'. When I say, "Oversized" this door was 2400mm tall and 55mm thick which weighed in at over 100kg so this door was hung within a very solid door frame and extra strong hinges were installed. Security was provided by powder coated ornate iron work and hardened steel reinforced mortice deadlocks.

A ‘cyclonic shop vac dust collector’ is a must for anyone who wants to improve their dust collection and air quality in the workshop also known as Cyclone or Vortex.

This system can be mounted on a cyclonic seperator cart for portability. Shop vac storage is also possible if mounted on a cart? Noise reduction can also be improved if placed in a sound proofed box.

It is important to realise the health implications of avoiding the dangers of wood dust and how much we breath while attending our daily tasks from ripping to sanding.

The Cyclonic system separates the dust before it reaches the shop vac and saves it from clogged filters and inefficiency. Shop vacs are notorious for allowing a degree of fine dust particles through and this potentially dangerous dust can cause numerous health degradation including CANCER and other Pulmonary conditions! Timber is also stored in some unsavoury environments were rats and other vermin may spread disease. Us woodworkers then handle such wooden materials and are at risk of contamination

A cyclonic dust separator has become a common addition and as a result many adaptions has become available to the woodworking industry. A really good shop vac ideas

'How to Make' wooden speaker brackets for free?

We found that after buying our Alesis Elevate Mk11 monitor speakers we found that mounting them on the desk was an action that should be avoided as the sound can bounce of the hard surfaces. So the answer had to be a pair of speaker brackets and so there goes the Amazon search for the ideal commercially available brackets. I did not like the look of the budget items and couldn't warrant the cost of the expensive versions.

Even if you use a Bluetooth speaker system you can put them on these brackets out of reach on the wall and stream strait to them. I have the LGG4 smartphone and use that to stream to my bluetooth speakers and you could do the same nomatter which brand of smartphone you have such as : Android, or IOS based mobiles.

The options came clear that i should make a pair of wooden monitor speaker brackets. A couple of scribbles later I came up with what you see in the video uploaded here, Enjoy xxx

Some elements of this video was shot without a tripod and as a result not as crisp as with a tripod but I hope you can forgive me for that, sorry xxx

I have for years used the local sharpening service for the sharpening the 'Planer Knives' for the thicknesser and jointer but the costs just kept getting out of my control. I have tried many different methods suchas a Rexon sharpener and the sandpaer method which all worked well but really slow. Yes I'm impatient and needed a quicker method and so i toyed with the idea of using my large belt sander and a wooden guide block as can be seen in this video.

I also touch on using one of those knife alignment jigs that can be found on Amazon or Axminister. A bit of a Tutorial come demonstration come experimentation!

We make shutters and are keen to take a clear and honest approach to our customers. We use locally aquired timber and check for it's moisture content. We are regularly making smaller shutters as shown but our larger shuters are made with jigs. In this video we use a Nothern Pine but can make shutters with oak or chestnut.

Wooworking tips ledge and brace marking gauge 2018

After some criticism of my methods shown in a previous video of how i mark my cut line for the braces. I listened to his comments and took heed to design a simple marking gauge for the purpose of marking the cut line or angle with a pencil or marking gauge.

This simple ledge and brace marking gauge is so easy to make and can be made as a long time serving tool or just for the purpose of of a solitary job. This measuring come angle finding device quickly and easily find accurate cut lines for cutting with a saw such as a chopsaw, mitre saw, radial arm saw, hand saw or even a bandsaw.

I have looked on many different woodwork tools suppliers such as axminster, rutlands and some wellknown american sites and found nothing. Maybe the option is to make our own specialist tools.

I believe we are always learning and no less am I and so I appreciate any questions or advice in the comments below.

how I mark & cut the brace on ledge and brace shutters or doors 2018.

I hope this helps someone please subscribe xx

Window shutters are an important for home security in France and as a result French Insurance companies are insisting that your home is protected so check if there are any clauses in your policy.

Brightly painted wooden shutters are a major part of french architectural heritage across France but sadly there are many homes without them especially newbuilds but the shutters don't only add security but help increase insulation and wind proofing. 1.25 per 25mm is the r/value for softwood so it will help to decrease your window heat loss.

Construction

Construction is ledge and braced (Z frame) or plain ledge to your supplied measurements. Our volets are supplied unpainted and constructed to allow for trimming & fitting.

Materials

Our most popular product is 26mm PINE (Volet Lame) tongue and grooved shutter board which we call our 'standard range'. This range is in our opinion the most cost effective option.

Our second popular product is 21mm OAK tongue and grooved shutter board which we machine ourselves. This product is superior to most available and will last severe weather with only minor upkeep. The cost may be higher than the pine but will last a very long time.

How to make an adjustable wooden computer monitor bracket from scraps for free 2018

Please subscribe and Comment below

Yep another wooden thing to hold something not woody but equally important! Yes I had another dilema and it was that my second monitor was using desk space which could be used for snacks and other stuff. Brain storming the solution was fun and 'BOOM' it was obvious what was needed to be done, I needed the toilet and and scrap of paper to come up with a working solution! so here it is my wooden adjustable monitor bracket for a non wooden non adjustable computer monitor.

Please Enjoy and if you have any non toilet related questions please comment below and please don't forget to subscribe and I will love you forever xxx

After winging to myself about the price of those Festool domino dowells I vowed not to buy them after all they are only wood and i have endless offcuts of Oak!! So I set off to find suitable router bits and a simple method to prepare the stock and shape the edges. It was simple and obvious but I made a video anyway so please enjoy.

Any size or timber can be used which opens up additional uses such as accenting timbers or balancing timber strength thus reducing stresses. You can make them tight or loose dry or glued. You can even vice press them like the originals which adds assembly.

I use Cascamite glues which in my opinion is a better solution to PVA, Gorilla,Titebond or other yellow glues

I do have a workshop so I obviously used my machines but the principle is simple. If you are not fortunate enough to have the same tools it is still quite possible to make these wooden speaker brackets with basic hand tools.
